This Vlog is based on my trip to Vijaygarh Fort Sonbhadra(विजयगढ़ किला) and in this video I have discussed about Vijaygarh Fort History in Hindi. Vijaygarh Fort(Vijaygarh Kila) is also referred to as Chandrakanta ka Kila or Vijaygarh ka Kila as it is said the once upon a time Vijaygarh’s princess Chandrakanta used to live here. Vijaygarh Fort Robertsganj Uttar Pradesh is one of the most popular Sonbhadra Tourist Places. Ever since the story of Chandrakanta(Chandrakanta ki kahani/विजयगढ़ किला का कहानी) was shown on television screen, Vijaygarh Fort’s mystery(विजयगढ़ किला का रहस्य/Chandrakanta kila ka rahasya) attracted people from all over the district of Robertsganj(Sonbhadra). So, not only I have told the history of Vijaygarh Fort(विजयगढ़ फोर्ट हिस्ट्री) in this Video(विजयगढ़ किला का वीडियो) but I have also discussed about its architecture and stories associated with it. A lot of people asked me to show Vijaygarh Fort(विजयगढ़ किला दिखाइए) on channel so finally I have come up with the video.
Vijaygarh Fort(विजयगढ़ किला) is known to be a ruined fort which is located around 30 km from Robertsganj(Sonbhadra) and around 110 km from Varanasi, in Mau Kalan village on Robertsganj-Churk road, in the Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh state in India. Vijaygarh Fort is known to be built by famous king Banasur from the times of Mahabharat and this is the place where famous king of Magadh Jarasandh was kept behind the bars. It is also said that when Chandragupta Maurya was going to attack Magadh, his army stayed at this fort only. From 4th Century to 6th Century, this fort was ruled by Gupta Dynasty and from 6th Century to 1036, this fort was ruled by Gurjar Pratihar Dynasty. In 1040, Jadon Rajput king Vijay Pal reconstructed this fort. Then in Mughal Era in the time of Mughal Emperor Akbar i.e., from 1556 to 1605 this fort was ruled by the Mughal Empire but later it was ruled by kings of benaras state. Last ruler of Vijaygarh Fort was Raja Chait Singh who hailed from Benares. He ruled this fort until Britishers reached this point. The fort is known to be mesmeric one and it is believed that another fort is hidden under it. Near the main gate(Singh Dwar) of the fort there is a tomb of Saiyyed Jain-ul-Abdin Meer Sahib famously called Hazrat Meeran Shah Baba. Although there are 7 lakes in the fort premises, but there are two lakes known as Mira Sagar and Ram Sagar near the tomb which are never dry, even in the summers! It is said that no one has ever been able to measure the depth of Ram Sagar and once upon a time some utensils used to come out of this lake and people used to eat in the and keep it back in the lake. In the Hindu month of Shravana, Kānvarias (Kanwar Yatra) collect water from Ram Sagar and then start their holy journey towards Shivdwar dham.
Vijaygarh Fort houses a number of old temples and red stone pillars which have inscriptions of Vishnuverdhan feudatory of Samudragupta. The fort is known for its rock inscriptions, cave paintings, as well as a number of statues and its perennial ponds. More than half the Fort’s area is covered by the steep as well as rugged hills of the Kaimur Range and it is located at an elevation of 400 feet. Between the two lakes there is a palace known as Rang Mahal(रंग महल) which used to have artistic rock carvings and is is said that this is the palace of Princess Chandrakanta of Vijaygarh. Chandrakanta Mahal(Rang Mahal) is also a complete ruined palace but you can still see some beautiful gates with arch design. The fort also houses a baradari and a Kutchery(Court) where kings used to listed to the problems of the common people and based on that they used to take the decisions. There is a fair (Urs) which is organized here in April every year, and people from all religions and sects gather here to attend it. Vijaygarh fort has both historical as well as archaeological importance.
The fort as well as Princess Chandrakanta were described in one of the earliest hindi novel in India known as Chandrakanta, which was written by Devaki Nandan Khatri in 1888. Based on the same novel a television serial named Chandrakanta was telecasted on Doordarshan from 1994 to 1996 which told the love story of Naugarh’s prince Kunwar Virendra Singh and Vijaygarh’s princess Chandrakanta. Krur Singh, who was a member of the Vijaygarh king’s court used to dream of marrying Chandrakanta and occupying the throne of Vijaygarh. When Krur Singh fails in his mission, he flees Vijaygarh and become friends with Shivdutt, who was known to be the powerful neighboring king of Chunargarh (Chunar Fort). Krur Singh asks Shivdutt to get him Chandrakanta at any cost. Shivdutt captures Chandrakanta and while she was running away from Shivdutt, Chandrakanta finds herself a prisoner in a tilism. After which Naugarh’s prince Kunvar Virendra Singh breaks the tilism and fights with Shivdutt taking the help of aiyyars.
